What happens if I play Elnuk Herd from face down to a battlefield with no other friendly units?
Elnuk Herd is the only legal target of its play effect, so it gets +3 might this turn and then recycles itself.
The play effect is added to the chain only after Elnuk Herd enters the battlefield. Its current text says "a friendly unit," so the ability can target Elnuk Herd itself because an ability and its source are separate objects. Because Elnuk Herd was played from face down, the play effect must choose a target at that battlefield. With no other friendly unit there, Elnuk Herd must be chosen during finalization.
When the ability resolves, it gives Elnuk Herd +3 might before recycling it because Elnuk Herd was played from face down.
Errata
Elnuk Herd received functional errata. Older printings say "another friendly unit"; the current text says "a friendly unit." Removing "another" allows Elnuk Herd to target itself.
