Lotus Trap
Does Lotus Trap affect how much damage needs to be assigned in combat?
No. Assignment and dealing are separate steps in the combat sequence, and Lotus Trap only applies at the dealing step.
Lotus Trap is a replacement effect that applies when damage is dealt, not when it is assigned. The combat damage sequence treats these as two separate and distinct steps.[460.2.c.1][460.2.c.1.a]
The assignment step requires lethal damage to be assigned to a unit in full before any remaining damage may be assigned to a different unit.[460.2.c.3] Lethal damage is defined as non-zero damage equalling or exceeding a unit's might — this definition makes no reference to replacement effects that apply at the time of dealing. Lotus Trap's doubling only becomes relevant later, when damage is actually dealt.[460.2.d]
