Cataclysm
Unofficial Riftbound rulings for Cataclysm, with rules explanations, examples, and Core Rules citations.
Does Cataclysm still move a unit if the chosen battlefield is unoccupied when it resolves?
No, if the chosen battlefield is unoccupied when Cataclysm resolves, the chosen unit does not move.
Cataclysm requires the move's destination to be "an occupied enemy battlefield," and a move's source defines any restrictions on its legal destinations. You choose the destination while playing the spell and cannot change that choice later unless a spell or ability instructs you to. Once the chosen battlefield is unoccupied, it no longer satisfies Cataclysm's destination restriction, so the move cannot occur.
The battlefield is a restriction on the move's destination, not a target. Cataclysm therefore does not mistarget solely because the battlefield becomes unoccupied. Its move instruction is instead impossible and negated.
