Movement

Commonly asked questions about moving permanents between locations

Up-to-date: This page has been reviewed against the current core rules document (version 1.4).

Does a unit move when it enters the board?

No.

Moving means changing a permanent's position from one space on the board to another.[446.1] A card entering the board from another game zone is a zone change, not a move.[446.2]

Playing or creating a unit at a battlefield therefore does not fulfill an ability that triggers when the unit moves there. Replacing where a unit enters the board also does not turn that entry into a move.

Can I choose a unit's current location as its move destination?

No.

When an effect requires a player to choose a move destination for a unit, that destination must differ from the unit's current location.[355.4][355.4.a] If the card specifies the destination instead, the player makes no destination choice and this restriction does not affect whether the unit is a legal target. If the unit is already at that specified destination when the instruction resolves, the move is impossible and is ignored.[055]
