Riftbound FAQ

The Future of Riftbound FAQ

How Riftbound FAQ will navigate Legacy, stay focused, and connect players with the wider community.

The official Radiance Core Rules patch notes include an early look at a major rewrite of Riftbound's rules documents arriving with Legacy in January 2027. The documents are being rebuilt from the ground up to reduce repetition, improve their ordering, and make them easier for players and judges to use as references. The announcement is explicit about what will not change:

To be clear: this is about rewriting the rules to be more readable, and it won’t change how Riftbound’s mechanics actually work.

That is good news for the game. It is also a much larger migration for this site than a normal rules update. I plan to continue maintaining Riftbound FAQ through Legacy. The transition will likely take weeks rather than the usual day or two, and existing rulings will remain available while I review them.

Why this is a large update

Each ruling on Riftbound FAQ does more than give a short answer. It explains why the answer follows from the rules and links the relevant claims to specific rule numbers in a specific version of the Core Rules.

When an entire rules document is reorganized, those citations do not necessarily have simple one-to-one replacements. Even if a ruling reaches exactly the same result under Legacy, its explanation may depend on definitions, wording, or an order of procedures that the new document presents differently. I will need to study the new rules as a whole, map their new structure, check every ruling, and rewrite explanations where replacing a citation would not be enough. The irony of a set named Legacy making nearly every citation on this site historical is not lost on me.

The exact scope of Legacy errata has not been published. Based on current discussions among judges and players, I expect broad templating updates across the card pool, but we will not know how many cards are affected until the official errata are available. Those changes may preserve how cards behave while still changing the wording that each FAQ answer needs to explain.

The Core Rules and Tournament Rules reference pages will need their own review as well. A normal rules diff is useful because two versions share enough structure for their changes to be compared directly. A ground-up rewrite could make a Radiance-to-Legacy diff show far more movement and rewording than meaningful rules changes. The existing historical references will remain available. Once the actual documents are available, I will decide how best to present the new Legacy references and whether a direct Radiance-to-Legacy comparison would still be useful.

What to expect during the transition

The review will happen in stages, and I cannot promise a launch-day migration, a page-by-page schedule, or a fixed completion date.

The purpose remains the same: helping players find clear answers and giving judges a reliable resource to share.

Each card, mechanic, and general-rules page identifies the Core Rules version it was reviewed against. After Legacy becomes the current version, pages still awaiting review will be marked as outdated and will continue linking to the historical rules they were checked against.

Many of those answers may still reach the same result, but I will not mark a page as current until its citations and reasoning have been checked against the new rules and applicable errata. Until then, treat an outdated page as guidance for its stated rules version rather than confirmation of the current Legacy rules. The latest official rules documents and errata remain the final authority.

I would rather take the time to review the site carefully than rush through more than a thousand citations and leave behind explanations that only look current. I will share a clearer status once the Legacy documents are available and I can assess the full scope of the work.

Staying focused

The Legacy transition is also an opportunity to reconsider what this project should be. Riftbound FAQ began as a deliberately narrow project to document common card interactions and answer recurring rules questions in a lightweight format. That remains the core of what I want this site to be.

The Reference section went well beyond my original idea for the project. Its current and historical rules documents, together with comparisons between versions, were inspired in part by Academy Ruins, which provides similar rules resources for Magic: The Gathering. It took a substantial amount of work to bring that idea here, but it has been worth the effort.

I was similarly hesitant to add the Card Errata List. It is broader than the original FAQ concept, but keeping printed and current card wording together is convenient and directly supports understanding rulings.

Those additions do not mean I want to turn Riftbound FAQ into an all-purpose platform. I do not plan to build a comprehensive card database like Scryfall, or add deck building and metagame statistics. Riftbound already has specialized community projects such as Piltover Archive, whose team focuses on card search, deck building, and metagame tools. Repeating that work here would spread this project thinner without serving players better.

I am also considering a broader review of how the site is structured as it grows. I want it to remain approachable, accessible, and easy to navigate rather than becoming overwhelming through accumulated features. That may mean reorganizing sections, simplifying parts of the experience, and removing material or features that no longer justify their complexity. The goal is not to make the site smaller for its own sake, but to keep its useful parts focused and easy to find.

During 2027, I plan to work with other judges and community projects to connect these resources more deliberately. That means looking for useful ways to link related tools, explanations, and community resources instead of reproducing them here. I will keep reviewing this site's goals as the game grows, improve what Riftbound FAQ does well, and direct players to other projects when those projects are better suited to their needs.

Thank you

In the three months leading up to this post, Riftbound FAQ recorded 95,879 visitors and 166,160 page views. I do not take that reach or the community's trust lightly.

Thank you to everyone who has shared a page, submitted feedback through the site, sent me a Discord DM, or brought these explanations into discussions across Riftbound servers. Your questions, corrections, and suggestions have caught mistakes and made the site more useful for everyone.

You can also find me as Near across several Riftbound Discord communities, including the official Riftbound Judges Discord, or as @civicevic on X.

Thank you as well for your patience while I work through this transition. The rule numbers may be starting over, but the community's help in building this resource still carries forward.

How was this page?
