Equipment
Unofficial answers about the Equipment mechanic in Riftbound, with examples and Core Rules citations.
What happens to attached equipment when a unit dies?
The equipment detaches at the unit's last location when the unit dies.
If that location is a battlefield, the detached equipment is recalled to its controller's base during the next cleanup. If that location is a base the equipment's controller does not control, the equipment is recalled to its controller's base during cleanup. If it is already at its controller's base, it remains there.
What happens to attached equipment when I take control of an enemy unit?
The equipment stays attached and keeps its existing controller; you take control only of the unit.
The equipment's controller can still choose it with Weaponmaster while it is attached to the unit you now control. If its Equip cost can be paid and it can legally be detached and attached, it detaches and attaches to the newly played unit.
Do Equip, Quick-Draw, or Weaponmaster count as choosing a unit?
Equip and Quick-Draw count as you choosing a unit because they target that unit; Weaponmaster has you choose equipment, not the unit with Weaponmaster.
- Equip: You choose a unit you control as the ability's target.
- Quick-Draw: Attaching does not inherently target, but the Quick-Draw ability mentions the unit it will attach to and therefore targets that unit.
- Weaponmaster: You choose equipment, not the unit with Weaponmaster.
Can opponents react to Equip, Quick-Draw, or Weaponmaster abilities?
Opponents can react before Equip, Quick-Draw, or Weaponmaster attaches equipment, but they cannot react before the Quick-Draw gear itself enters the board.
Equip is an activated ability that uses the chain. Other players have an opportunity to play Reactions before it resolves.
The Quick-Draw gear resolves immediately when finalized and enters the board before its triggered ability is put on the chain. Other players can react before that ability resolves and attaches the gear.
Weaponmaster is also a play effect put on the chain after its unit enters. Other players can react before it resolves and attaches the chosen equipment.
